What is “Green Building”?
Green building is a deliberate approach of designing and constructing buildings that are integrated into the wider site and community, consume less energy and water, are durable and easier to maintain, use resource efficient techniques and materials, and are healthier, safer, and more comfortable.
Why does green building matter? If you are interested in reducing your carbon footprint, conserving environmental resources, reducing water, electric, and gas bills, or having a healthy home for your family, building green matters. Most of us do not realize the significant environmental impact of traditional building methods. Below are a few interesting facts to consider:
- The U. S. comprises 5% of the world population but uses 25% of the world’s energy resources
- Buildings contribute to 48% of U.S. Energy Consumption (transportation is 27%)
- Construction of a 2,085 s.f. home uses up to 1.5 acres of forest
- For each ton of Portland cement produced, 1 ton of CO2 is emitted into the atmosphere
- 4.3 million tons of construction & demolition waste is generated per year in California alone
- Indoor air pollution is 2-5 times worse than outside and we spend over 90% of our time indoors
- 60% of homes and 30% of commercial buildings are classified as “sick”
- 15% of homeowners may be allergic to elements in their own homes
- 40% of children born today will develop some form of respiratory disease
- Of all the toxic chemicals monitored by the EPA, only 2 are more prevalent outdoors than in
